Not my kind of place. To me, the albergue, the priest, and the volunteers felt very cult-like and creepy. It was the only place on the Camino where I couldn’t wait to leave, and I left very early the next morning. I found the facilities disappointing, and the rooms were not clean.

The one-hour speech before dinner (about the “mission,” which felt more like a narcissistic monologue about himself than anything else) followed by another 30-minute talk after dinner was extreme. Also, trying to dictate which route pilgrims should take felt completely out of place. People were made to feel guilty for choosing the shorter route, even though it was 33°C. One of the core ideas of the Camino is that everyone walks their own Camino.
I also found the heavy guilt-tripping to encourage donations inappropriate. If donations (and the amount you give) are that essential, it would be better to simply charge a fixed price.
Because even if you had no money (which is exactly what the donativo system is meant for) you would still be made to feel like the worst person on earth if you didn’t donate.

That being said, and putting all of that aside, the garden was lovely and the dinner was good.

I would not come back.

Legendarne miejsce na camino w Kantabrii. Fajne pokoje, ogólnie duży teren na którym można odpocząć, coś zjeść (pyszna była wspólna kolacja robiona przez wolontariuszy), wyprać rzeczy (i je wysuszyć). Miejsce ma duszę i klimat. I funkcjonuje w stylu odpowiedzialnego donativo (czyli co łaska). Ksiądz, który założył to miejsce mimo bardzo słusznego wieku ciągle emanuje radością :D

We were very lucky to stay at Father Ernesto's albergue. It is a magical place full of history. The volunteers are all so helpful and incredibly kind people. We met wonderful peregrinos. Thank you for hosting us for the night. It was the absolute best way to recharge and continue our journey to Santiago de Compostela. Buen Camino

Great facilities, beautiful place, good rest, dinner is plenty, lunch is skimpy. They do repeatedly and frequently guilt trip you into the donation. The cultness is undeniable and there's strange dynamics between the "volunteers" and the "father" Ernesto.

There's a long speech before dinner, and another afterwards, with more guilt tripping. Perhaps it's just that this albergue needs to modernize their approach to getting donations, people dont want to be forced to sit and listen to an hour-long lecture on a man's life story, while he claims it's not about himself at all. A simple explanation given upon arrival with available information about the place's history would have made me eager to donate. On the other hand, the herding, preaching and shaming made me less and less keen.

Also: Ernesto's speech is plagued with racism and white-savior orientalism. He points out people from the crowd based on origin. The translator softens his speech, with a visible strain to salvage his politically outrageous wording.

As someone who is as cult averse as it gets, and thus slightly apprehensive reading some of the reviews...

... this place was really a fantastic experience. I saw no cult-like subservience, i just saw admiration and a common goal. The places to sleep were amazing, the Father and his acolytes clearly deeply desire to be hospitable and to be able to accept everyone who comes, and that is what shone through. The fact that I had to go find the donation box underlines the hospitality throughout. Oh, and even having a washer AND dryer available was marvelous.

Incredibly amazing place to spend a night on your way to Santander. Do not let yourself be conditioned by the bad reviews, which I honestly do not understand.

We felt really welcome all the time, the volunteers were really nice and helpful, it was such a calm and free atmosphere.

The talk from Ernesto was truly inspiring, a much needed reflection around humanitarian values and consumerism in our current society. It was beautiful to learn about his travels around the world and the role of his family in the creation of this albergue.

The community dinner was beautiful and delicious. I really felt the spirit of Camino de Santiago there and we continued walking with pilgrims we met there.

Wonderful to have been part of this beautiful utopia for one day. If you can experience this place on your camino, do it 💓

Nosaltres ens vam sentir molt acollits. Vam rebre dinar, sopar i esmorzar. Les habitacions eren netes. I estava tot en bon estat. La filosofia humanista que hi ha, per nosaltres, va ser molt maca. Animem a qualsevol persona a parar-hi!
