We spent 4 days in the beautiful Posada run by Lucy and Angel. What great hosts they are, sharing with you their knowledge about the area. And what a privilege to enjoy Lucy's cooking for breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner. The rooms are comfortable, the garden is beautiful, as is the swimming pool and the honesty bar is a great extra. Can recommend spending a holiday here to everyone.
If you love walking and authentic local food, this is an excellent place to stay. Posada San Marcos sits on the edge of the village, with walking trails accessible directly from the front door.
Angel and Lucy are exceptional hosts, looking after guests with warmth and care from before arrival right through to a final hug on departure. Angel’s local knowledge and enthusiasm for sharing it are infectious. Lucy is a phenomenal cook — breakfast was excellent, and the dinners were truly exceptional.
The property itself is beautiful, spotless, and thoughtfully designed - giving a home from home feeling. It is refreshing to see a hotel take its environmental credentials and sustainable practices so seriously. Our room was spacious and opened onto a peaceful private terrace and garden with views of the surrounding hills.
We will definitely be back as soon as possible.
Warm and welcoming.
If you want peace, good food, authentic Spain, good walking, good flora and fauna and genial hosts, this is for you.
We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Posada San Marcos in Alájar. The surrounding area is absolutely stunning and is perfect for exploring and walking. Lucy and Angel were excellent hosts. They are welcoming, attentive, and always happy to help with anything we needed. The accommodation was comfortable, peaceful, and full of charm. We felt very well looked after throughout our stay and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!
Generous, thoughtful, knowledgeable hosts. Independent walking with support of loaned GPS maps. Spectacular scenery - tree covered hillsides, wildflowers in profusion, birdsong from dawn to dusk.
This is a wonderful place for anyone who enjoys walking and trekking. There are many great walks in the area and Angel and Lucy are matvelous hosts. The accommodation was perfect and the food was excellent.
We were impressed with the efforts that were made to maximise sustainability and to support local businesses when sourcing foodstuffs, wines and beers. Angel and Lucy are truly passionate about what they do and we were delighted to discover their wonderful place.
We are dying to return!
Very comfortable village-centre posada in a great location for walking in the Sierra. Friendly hosts Lucy and Angel have a wealth of knowledge about the area, including great walking routes, local artisans, food, wildlife and history. The homemade breakfasts, packed lunches and dinners are wonderful and the accommodation is simple, stylish and comfortable. And there's a pool!
We found the Hotel Posada San Marcos to be a haven of paradise. It was was a truly remarkable & unique hotel experience due to the tireless efforts of Lucy & Angel. The service, food and hospitality provided was exceptional. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay and can't wait to return. It was the highlight of our 11 nights in this part of Spain. Lucy's cooking was incredible and we were grateful to be experiencing this 3 times daily with breakfast, picnic lunch & dinner. This amazing hotel is set in the beautiful countryside around Alajar and the Sierra Aracena which has been a privilege to discover.
Posada San Marcos is an ideal base for walking in a remote part of Andalusia. The wild flowers were stunning - last week in April - the cork trees, animals - including cows, goats and sheep with bells around their necks - scenery, traditional villages and variety of walks were second to none. Lucy provides an excellent evening meal, all produced from scratch using locally sourced ingredients and served outside in warm weather. The accommodation is comfortable with everything you need. Lucy’s help with transport bookings and an internet problem was much appreciated. We recommend this type of holiday to those who love the countryside, good food and challenging walks.
A relaxing stay in a beautiful location with generous hosts.
The enthusiasm shown by both Lucy and Angel is infectious. We went on a short guided walk around the area with Angel and learnt so much about the flora and fauna and culture of the area. The layout of the hotel itself has been well thought out and the room nice and large with each having their own balcony overlooking the beautiful gardens (Angel's pride and joy I think!) and swimming pool.
We ate dinner there on all the nights we stayed and whilst the food was good, with all ingredients locally sourced, I did think it was on the expensive side.
The biggest drawback for us was the beds. I realise firmness and softness of mattresses is a very personal thing but both us thought the beds were just far too soft (we were is a twin room). I am afraid this would put me off staying here again.
Lucy and Angel arranged a weeks long walking tour for us which was excellent and I would highly recommend.
All-in-all it was a pleasure to meet both Lucy and Angel and we had a really enjoyable week in their care (it was just a shame about the beds!)
