This stay was something so far beyond anything we experienced as Peregrinos on El Camino. We began our walk before sunrise and due to blisters decided to cut the day short. We arrived early and the Padre who cares not only for the Albergue but for the eight villages and four churches in the area brought us in to eat something before giving us a tour of the complex that was like walking through a time capsule! The complex itself ranges from hundreds of years old to relatively new, with old hand-painted Romany carriages converted into sleeping areas, the standard bunk rooms festooned with beautiful paintings... The facilities were standard basic one expects from albergues.
What sets it apart is the Padre! We arrived Sunday morning and because we are professional singers, he asked us to sing at three masses in three different churches. He drove us there in a 1997 VW Golf with 715,000km on the odometer (this could be the first of his miracles for his sainthood 😁) and in the evening us all with stories from his thirty years as the priest of that parish. Entertaining, warm, caring... I will return just to experience this genuine man of God's good nature.
I wasn't originally planning to stop in Fuenterroble along El Camino, but I'm so glad I did. My favorite experience at an Albergue so far! It is not fancy - no AC, depending on the number of pilgrims you may share a crowded dorm, bathrooms and showers are very basic - but the hospitality we all experienced was unparalleled. From the tour of the lovingly cared for and decorated compound to the meals provided, I felt like we were part of a family there for a day
Magical—a dreamlike, peaceful, loving place.
Fabulous experience! Highly recommend. The hosts were all amazing and the chef. A shoutout to Mango who made us feel right at home. We were super surprised with the facilities and actually overwhelmed with the amount and quality of the communal meal. The atmosphere was tranquil and had the real Camino spirit! Breakfast was delicious I highly enjoyed this - donation reflected The pilgrims mass and blessing was an added touch. 🙏
There’s history and genuine Camino spirit here, and the hospitaleros were welcoming from the start. The hand-drawn pilgrim stamp was a great touch and felt more personal than most.
But the stay itself was mixed.
Dorm room was packed tightly with bunks, and the mattresses and pillows felt old and not particularly clean. Worst part was the cold shower after a long stage—hard to forget that one.
Communal dinner exists, but it’s very minimal. If you arrive hungry, eat beforehand. No kitchen access for pilgrims either, only a fridge.
Breakfast coffee was the classic “top off yesterday’s pot with fresh coffee” approach. It shows.
Bar across the street has decent food, and the nearby grocery store helps fill the gaps.
The Camino spirit is here. The facilities need more care.
Wonderful Albergue for pilgrims
A hidden gem
Great community mindset
With dinner and breakfast
.. And singing in the nearby church
Carinissimi i volontari...
Grazie di tutto ❤️
