Overall, I had a great stay at Surfing Etxea and would definitely recommend it, especially if you’re looking for a hostel in a fantastic location. Like many European hostels, there are a few tradeoffs, but the positives outweighed the negatives.
Pros:
*Best location in San Sebastián. It’s right in Gros, just steps from Zurriola Beach and an easy walk to the Old Town, making it a perfect base for exploring the city.
*Great café/bar downstairs. A nice place to grab a beer, and they also serve a solid breakfast (I especially enjoyed the smoothie bowl and toast).
* Wonderful staff. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful throughout my stay.
* Friendly atmosphere. While it isn’t an especially social hostel, I still met some great people and made a few friends during my stay.
Cons:
* The rooms get very hot. There are fans, but they don’t do much to cool the rooms in warm weather. If air conditioning or a cool room is a must for you, this may not be the best choice.
* The bedding could be refreshed more frequently for guests staying multiple nights, as it starts to feel less fresh after several days.
* Bathrooms were adequate but not always the cleanest.
* Limited organized social activities. They offer a weekly pintxos crawl, which was fun, but there aren’t many other hostel-organized events.
Overall, these are fairly typical compromises for a European hostel. My only other note is that Surfing Etxea is relatively expensive compared to larger hostels in bigger European cities, so just be prepared for the higher price.
Over booking. Bad experience with the extra bed.
Not clean the bathroom. It needs to be improved.
A girl is shouting and room light on around midnight.
We booked the private room in this place. The decoration is beautiful and the service is very kind. However, the bedroom wall is next to the shared kitchen area, so there's some noise when people use it. But it has a great quality/price ratio.
Great location great service very friendly surf rentals, short walk to the beach what more could you ask for?
Great place. Great staff.
Awesome experience, staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Two blocks away from the sea. Great spot.
I really enjoyed staying here, it was my first time and I would be thrilled to return. I slept in the dorm of four which was spacious, light and airy.
The storage draws below the beds are huge so you really can unpack everything safe and securely. The larger bathroom was clean and again, spacious. The bar area and comfy seating area is super and this place has something for everybody! Whether you want to read your book, surf, socialise and bar hop it’s one for all. Out of the staff, Fran was so hospitable, warm, helpful and serving the best coffees in house and for takeaway. Plus the lemon pie was a treat. Great consistent service from Fran across the four days 🙏
Very nice, very clean hostel. The staff was friendly and inviting. They show you to your room and explain everything. The location is great, especially to the beach where the surfers are. The two things I didn't love was the bathrooms were super cramped, but there is an option for a private bathroom if it is open. Also, the kitchen only has a fridge and microwave, so you can't cook a lot if you wanted to.
I really enjoyed the 6 nights I spent here. One of the best hotels if stayed in a long time. The place was really clean, the bed was comfortable, location was perfect and most of all the staff and volunteers were all legends! They were really helpful, fun loving and unique people.
This made our day! Six nights, and hearing that the team made the biggest impression, that's exactly what Surfing Etxea is about. Clean, comfy, well located... but it's the people that make it home. 🙌
Hope to see you back on the water soon Kevin! 🏄
The Surfing Etxea Team 🌊
Where to start? One of the best—if not the best—hostels I’ve stayed at in Europe. Whether you’re on a surf trip or just visiting the region, Surfing Etxea is clearly the best option in San Sebastián.
For surfers, there’s a (very comfortable) dedicated space with boards and wetsuits available for rent. The rooms are modern and clean, just like the bathrooms.
Special shoutout to the staff—Shareen, Anna, Segundo, Francesca, Lina and Francisco who make you feel right at home ❤️
Thanks Léo!!!!!!! Hope to see you back soon! 🏄
